PROMPT OBEDIENCE

Monday 12th January – Monday of week 1 of the year

Reflection: Mark 1:14-20

PROMPT OBEDIENCE

The gospel reading of today is a perfect illustration of prompt obedience to God. Obedience is a key factor in the process of following Christ as God’s children. This is especially important when we do not know what awaits us in future but simply follow God’s commands bearing in mind that He has the best plans for us and that the reward of eternal happiness awaits those that totally and promptly obey God.

Simon, Andrew and James and John, the sons of Zebedee promptly obeyed Jesus’ call, abandoning their nets and their daily work and followed Christ, thus making themselves available for the fulfilment of Christ’s mission on earth. Little did they know that their act of obedience was going to be totally life transforming and that you and I, living about 20 centuries later will still keep making reference to them.

Brethren, how often do we disobey God’s instructions, whether spoken to us in His word, through others or even deep down in our hearts? Have you ever considered that like the disciples, you too are called to renounce yourself and follow Christ? Do you realise that just like Simon and the others, there is an eternal reward for you if you sincerely obey God and on the other hand, there is a reward for disobedience? Our judgement will be based on our obedience to God – that obedience that stems from a deep love for God and leads us to love others just as He has loved us (Matthew 7: 21; Matthew 25: 31-46). Let us pray for the grace to totally obey Christ no matter the cost.

PRAYER: Father Lord, in your love, please give me the grace to be totally obedient to you just like Christ obeyed you even unto death. Amen.
